I feel this photo could really reach students on the violence that came during the civil rights movement. When students are taught about Martin Luther King Jr.'s ideals and idea of a non-violent form of protest like the Montgomery Bus Boycott, or the Diner sit inn's they forget that violence happened in retaliation. I think this would be a good way to show contrast between conflicting ideals of civil rights, Martin Luther Kings turn the other cheek method, to Malcolm X's liberation and eye for an eye method.

3. What caused this to happen?
4. Why isn't he fighting back?
5. Is this really necessary?

Outstanding questions and use of photo to help students think critically about an historical event!
