Double Entry Journal #6

1.     Are you a technoloevangelist of a technoloskeptic? If I had to choose between the two I would have to say I am a technoloskeptic. For a long time I have not fully embraced the advancement of technology, only till now have I finally done so since I’ve started to pursue a career in education. However I don’t feel it is good to be totally one or the other.
2.     Why is the term Digital Native problematic? Because it polarizes the divide between the tech savvy and the computer illiterate.
3.     What is interactionist pedagogy and how does it differ from the "transmission model" of education? The interactionist pedagogy is a more technologically advanced form of social interaction, a newer form of shared thinking. Rather than the teacher being the sole barer of knowledge like the transmission model, the interactionist pedagogy promotes an open dialogue among students and through communication do they learn rather than memorize facts.
4.     List three vocabulary terms you were unfamiliar or unsure of their meaning and provide me with their definitions.
Cyberkids: Kids who grew up with access to the Internet.
Digital Divide: is an inequality between groups, broadly construed, in terms of access to, use of, or knowledge of information and communication technologies.
Net Generation: The generation that was raised on the Internet.

Quote:

“The current generation of young people will reinvent the workplace, and the society they in. They will do it along the progressive lines that are built into the technology they use everyday-of networks, collaboration, co-production and participation. The change in behavior has already happened. We have to get used to it, accept that the flow of knowledge moves both way and do our best to make sure no one is left behind.
                                                                                        (Green & Hannon, 2007, n.p)

Response:

I agree whole-heartedly with the above quote.  I have had teachers and still have teachers that are fighting the times. One that insisted on the class researching using books as the only source, to handwrite papers, and then they would complain to the class because they didn’t know how to work blackboard.  The real world doesn’t work that way anymore, and the purpose of education is to prepare students for that real world. I think the time that we are living in is very interesting because of the changes in technology, and the only way to embrace change for the better is for both sides, teacher and student, to concede and try to learn from each other. Like the quote says “the flow of knowledge goes both ways.”

-What new media literacies are associated with Wikipedia? Analyze, interpret, source evaluation, and research.
-How does Wikipedia promote the development of 21st century skills? By allowing critical thinking to take precedence in the a students research, now a student can look up something and factor in with alternate sources from reliable web sites to better find the truth about their particular subject.
-Should teachers let students use Wikipedia for research purposes? Why or Why not?
Yes, but only if they teach student on how to use Wikipedia properly, because when used right it is a huge asset to everyday life and to the real world.

The above source is an article on the importance of learning media literacy for teachers and students. It explains what media literacy is and tells how to teach it using good examples. I thought it related to what we read because in chapter one we discussed the importance of media literacy in both roles of education (teacher and student).
